In 2019, the government of Labrador and Newfoundland revealed details of a plan entitled ‘The Way Forward’, aimed at securing the health and prosperity of the province via a series of policy actions, including significant investments in health and long-term care.

That same year the contract for the design and build of the Central Long-Term Care Project – two new, identical 60-bed care homes in central Newfoundland – was awarded to Belroc’s longstanding partner, Pomerleau Construction.

We proactively reached out to Pomerleau about this project and in 2020 we were delighted to be engaged as their Division 10 partner for the build.

Located at twin sites in Grand Falls-Windsor and Gander, this project comprised two identical 60-bed long-term care residences, divided into four self-contained 15-bed houses.

To begin with, we discussed a broad scope of work including wall and door protection, handrails, cubicle track and curtains, toilet compartments, lockers, washroom accessories, mailboxes and entrance floor grilles.

In spring 2020, the project changed hands internally and the scope was further refined. As a result, we narrowed our focus exclusively to wall protection, including the provision of anti-microbial handrail in direct response to the deepening Covid-19 crisis at that time.

Due to Covid travel restrictions we were faced with challenges such as advanced on-site measuring, requiring some creative thinking and collaboration. This is now incorporated into many of our interprovincial quotation and procurement phases of a project.

Our final quotation included a comprehensive suite of wall and door protection products as follows:

  • SureContact antimicrobial vinyl handrail/bumper rail
  • Stainless steel bumper rail
  • Custom door frame guards and kickplates
  • Vinyl wall sheet
  • Stainless steel and vinyl corner guards

Bed bumpers were added to the specification for the project after construction.

As with the long journey to Newfoundland, we had to make all necessary arrangements for ferry crossings, tolls and highway driving, timing was key. Materials were shipped to site in November 2020 and packed systematically to facilitate delivery to both locations using one dedicated, consolidated truck. The shipment faced some tough winter weather, even shutting down the ferry service, luckily this was only a short delay and everything arrived safely.

As well as hands-on installation services, Belroc provided expert project management support to see this project through to completion, with residents due to move in over the coming weeks.

In addition to the 60 suites, these homes provide outdoor therapy space, intergenerational play areas and accessible wandering paths. Each building has a hospitality suite for family members of residents that are in palliative care, plus a salon, a family celebration room, a multi-purpose room, and a spiritual room.

We’re proud to have played a role in the development of facilities that will enhance the quality of life and care for senior citizens of this region well into the future.
