It’s always daunting starting a new job, especially when it’s your first professional role after high school – and the majority of us can only imagine what it would be like doing it in the middle of a global pandemic! For Belroc’s newest recruit Lenay Lawrenson, this was the landscape she found herself going into – starting a new job with part of our team still working from home, and getting thrown in at the deep end on lots of tasks she had never done before. Thankfully, Lenay had a little experience of ‘normal’ life at Belroc having worked here a few summers in the past, and we are pleased to say that she has risen to every challenge she has encountered so far with aplomb. We cornered her for a quick chat now that the dust of being a new start in a pandemic has started to settle…
Hi Lenay! Congratulations on your new role at Belroc – what’s your official title?
Hello! And thank you. My role is Executive Assistant, which basically means I am here to assist Owen Lawrenson and Jon Pittman in any required admin work. During this strange time I’ve been pitching in to help others around the office when I can as well. It’s all hands to the pump at Belroc right now! I’ve been here for 8 weeks and it’s been quite a steep learning curve, but since I did some summer work here in the past, I already knew some of the people and systems a little, which has been really helpful.
What’s your favourite thing about your job so far?
My favourite thing is being in a supportive role where I get to try out and learn a little bit of everything from everyone. My colleagues have been really amazing at giving me assistance and helping me with lots of different tasks that are new to me.
What’s the most challenging thing?
I’d say phones – I don’t have too much experience in that area and it’s daunting when the customer is expecting you to know how to process their enquiry. Practice makes perfect I guess!
What would you say are the key attributes required to perform well in your role?
I would say organizational skills, productivity, and willingness to learn and adapt.
If you didn’t work at Belroc, what would your dream job be?
I love animals, so probably something in that field.
Do you have any hobbies or interests away from work?
I love running and trying out new cafes with my sisters.
Tell us an interesting fact about yourself that colleagues might not know?
I never get brain freeze from cold food or drinks!
Name one thing you couldn’t live without?
Family & friends. Is that one thing or two?! I couldn’t live without either.
